The Plot

Jesus is riding into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, with his disciples. The people of the city welcome him with cheers and palm leaves, proclaiming him the Messiah, but local priests fear the power of Jesus' message threatens their position. They offer Judas, one of the disciples, thirty pieces of silver to betray his friend. Jesus is imprisoned, and, over the objections of Pontius Pilate, but on the insistence of the jeering crowds, crucified. Mary Magdalene and other faithful followers of Jesus prayerfully await his resurrection, spreading the word far and wide upon his return, "He lives again!"

Ideas for Larger or Smaller Casts

  • All spoken text is delivered by the narrators, who can be as few or as numerous as required.

  • Some principal roles can be split or merged.

  • Ensemble groupings (e.g. townsfolk) can be expanded or reduced as required.

  • The operation of the musical allows for a child-involved production crew.
